Cartoon Saturday

Off to the races ...

Visionary designer and entrepreneur Steve Jobs died this past week of pancreatic cancer; the Mexican navy has found another 32 bodies, victims of the country's savage drug wars; Apple has announced the release of the iPhone 4S, which includes an artificial-intelligence assistant named Siri who is probably more intelligent than most users of the phone; police arrested a man in California after the burglars who found child pornography on compact discs they'd stolen from his house turned him in to the police; in a shocking upset, reality star Kristin Cavallari was voted off Dancing with the Stars while lumbering wannabes Chaz Bono and Nancy Grace remain; and religion again reared its ugly head in the presidential campaign as a supporter of would-be theocrat Rick Perry described the Mormon church of contender Mitt Romney as a "cult."

Somehow, I don't think Jesus, Buddha, or Mohammed would vote Republican.

But you need Cartoon Saturday to get you past the buffoonery, so let's get right to it ...

It's that time of year when you can go to the farms and pick your own pumpkin to decorate for Halloween. But what about ...

Those insurance agents always manage to find a loophole ...

Two takes on what our animals are doing when we're not watching ...

And ...

The way the economy is these days, you're never quite sure what to do to protect your savings. Here are some ideas ...

And ...

It's all in what you call it ...

Keeping it all in the family ...

How it was back then ...

And finally, something all of us married fellows can relate to ...

Oddly enough, considering that last cartoon, I got a free pass this year when I completely forgot our anniversary. But that was only because Agnes completely forgot it, too. Whew!

It looks as if we are going to have some spectacular fall weather this weekend, which also happens to be the three-day Columbus Day holiday weekend, so there will be an extra day to enjoy it. I have some yard work to do, we'll be visiting the local grandchildren, and generally enjoying the weekend.

If you are here in the DC-Maryland-Northern Virginia area and looking for something interesting to do, go out tomorrow and cheer on the competitors at the DC Dance Challenge at the beautiful Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park. Agnes and I won't be able to be there, unfortunately, but we're putting our hands together over the distance for our friends who will be cutting their competitive rugs.

Remember: Ballroom Dancers Do It on Hardwood Floors!

Have a good day and a great weekend. More thoughts tomorrow.

Living on the edge with foregetting things. Agnes is a good sport.

The dog in the cartooon looks positively demented -- is he a pervhound? That's a new breed for the AKC.

Some real classics there, like the inflatable leg, Asap and the doghouse.
