Today is August 4th. There are 94 days left until the election. Grit your teeth, hunker down, and believe nothing you hear that ends with the words, "I'm (insert candidate here) and I approved this message."
Retired porn star Jenna Jameson has endorsed Republican presidential wannabe Mitt Romney, saying (in a moment of refreshing and unaccustomed honesty), "I'm very looking forward to a Republican being back in office. When you're rich, you want a Republican in office;" pro- and anti-gay marriage advocates conducted equally stupid and offensive demonstrations at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country; a British court has sentenced the parents of a Pakistani girl to life in prison for murdering her in a so-called "honor killing;" Islamists in Mali have stoned a man and woman to death for allegedly committing adultery; and social networking site Facebook has reported that 8.7 percent of its 955 million monthly active users worldwide - about 83 million - are actually duplicate or false accounts.
Nothing false here ... just honest-to-goodness, down-to-earth, take-it-to-the-bank Cartoon Saturday! Let's get to it ...
We lead off with the traditional ghastly pun cartoon of the week ...
I think many of my readers ... especially Andrea ... can appreciate this one ...
I'd never really thought about it before, but this spin on tie-ins to the Olympics is pretty accurate (and funny) ...
This week's collection of related cartoons is based on clowns ... no, not the ones who waste time and money on Capitol Hill, but real clowns in real circuses. One of the classic clown routines involves the tiny car - usually a VW Beetle or an Austin Mini - that drives out into the ring and disgorges a huge number of clowns. Kind of like an election, but funnier. Here is a series of cartoons that take off on the overcrowded clown car idea ...
And,
The basic idea, but with a corporate twist ...
Even a clown funeral can be funny ...
Not quite as topical as it was two years ago, but still funny ...
Same basic joke, with an air travel twist ...
And finally, the law-and-order spin* ...
And that's Cartoon Saturday for this week. I need to go outside and mow the lawn before the day gets too hot, and then Agnes and I will probably head out to the Lego BrickFair at the Dulles Expo Center for a day of acting like kids**.
Have a great day and a wonderful weekend. More thoughts (in a more serious vein) tomorrow.
Bilbo
** Which is much safer and easier on old joints than playing Olympic Gymnastics with a four-year-old, as I now know.
Can we leave our bodies to social science, or must it be earth science?
ReplyDeleteGreat clown cartoons I thin of politicians.
It was a great picnic cartoon. Bilbo, you must have channeled Congress considering the cartoons.
ReplyDeleteThat Olympic athlete in the Blondie cartoon can go to France.
ReplyDelete"There's a place in France,
Where te naked athletes dance..."
So you're saying Capitol Hill is just one big clown car?
ReplyDeleteDuck - depends on how social the science is that you're thinking of.
ReplyDeleteAngelique - I can think of a lot better people to channel than Congress.
Elvis - careful ... this is a PG-rated blog!
Mike - if the shoe fits ... and it does ...
Great cartoons!
ReplyDeleteHappy Lizzie Borden Day!
