We spent a very long, warm, and exhausting day yesterday at Great Country Farms with our daughter and the local granddaughters, picking apples, riding cow trains, driving antique tractors, playing "Opa's a monster*," and generally having a great time in the warm fall sun. Of course, it's easier if you're under ten rather than over sixty.
But when all is said and done, it's good to both begin and end the day with some good reading. Leya had a book called "Suddenly" that she thought was great fun ... especially when she asked me to read it to her backwards. Would you know how to pronounce "ylneddus?"
Oy.
Well anyhow, that got me to thinking that I have a huge and ever-growing collection of nice Internet memes about books and reading**. I shared some of them with you a while back, and now it's time to bring out another few and try to get everyone interested in reading ... especially to your children and grandchildren ...
That's how it worked for me ...
And heaven knows we need more of those ...
And still I read favorite books over and over again ...
The Doctor knows ...
There's a reason we have laps when we sit down ...
I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that lap app over the years ...
True dat! ...
That Mr Gaiman is a smart fellow ...
And so is Boromir ...
The diagnosis is frequently obvious ...
Have a good day. Read more ... to yourself or to your children and grandchildren. You'll be investing in the future of ideas.
More thoughts tomorrow.

* It involves a lot of menacing growling and slow-motion chases. I don't do fast-motion chases any more unless being pursued by someone exercising his Second Amendment rights.
** Sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it?
My best memories of my mom are when I was a kid and she took me to the library. I loved the smell, all the books, the big beautiful building and most of all the card catalog. I loved how the old libraries weres so grand. My mom and I would go to the library and in the summer my little sister would scream, But it's summer I don't have to read! It didn't wear off on her as it did me.
ReplyDeleteReading is definitely a good thing!
ReplyDeleteMy day is not complete without time to read!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a long time since I've read Call of the WIld and White Fang (grade school). I should probably hunt them down again.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy time spent reading, especially books not labeled 'required reading.'
ReplyDeleteExcellent. My 5th grade teacher, who happened to have taught my father when she started her career, often said, "You can't beat a reader!"
ReplyDeleteEven a Books-a-Million is better than nothing.
ReplyDeleteIt is really a joy to see my grandson reading so many books as a challenge in his class. They read a book, then take a test on the internet on the content. He loves the challenge of accumulating, and at eight has read all of Harry Potter. My daughter really deserves all the credit.
