The Right-Cheek Ass Clown for July, 2018

We're past the halfway point of 2018, and there's just no letup in the number of people desperately trying to win my Ass Clown awards. And so it is that we separate the chaff from the rest of the chaff and name our

Right-Cheek Ass Clown for July, 2018

and the award goes - for the fourth time - to

Senate Majority Leader
Mitch McConnell (R, KY)

In a time when our political leadership has risen to unparalleled heights of hypocrisy and substandard performance, Senator McConnell stands head and shoulders above all competition with his insistence on an immediate vote to seat a replacement for retiring Supreme Court justice Anthony Kennedy, despite having inflexibly insisted that such a vote would absolutely not be taken for President Obama's last Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, because the vacancy occurred in an election year. Senator McConnell has compounded his hypocrisy by claiming that the two situations are entirely different - that a presidential election and a Congressional election are totally different, and that the only important election is the presidential one, because the president makes Supreme Court nominations.

While it is, of course, true that the sitting president nominates a preferred candidate to the court, Senator McConnell has failed to note the fact that it is the Senate which actually votes on the candidate ... thus, one can persuasively argue that a Congressional election is more important than a presidential one, because the "people's voice" Senator McConnell is so anxious to have heard is more reflective of the outcome of a Congressional election ... especially given that the sitting president was elected (albeit legally and Constitutionally) by a minority of the people.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is named as our Right-Cheek Ass Clown for the month of July, 2018, for his supreme exercise of the art of political hypocrisy.

Have a good day, and come back tomorrow for Cartoon Saturday. More thoughts then.
