Yesterday was the birthday of singer and songwriter Joseph Alfred Souter, better known by his stage name of Joe South. He wrote a large number of monster hits for other artists, including "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden" for Lynn Anderson and "Down in the Boondocks" for Billy Joe Royal. His own releases included "Games People Play" and today's song, the nostalgic hit "Don't it Make You Want to Go Home?" As we get older and learn more of life and responsibility, many of us do want to go home. But sadly, it's not there any more. That's why we have music and memories, and why the luckier of us have warm and loving extended families.
