It's the first Saturday in May ... soon, 2016 will be half-over. Oy.
An enormous wildfire raging in Canada has forced the evacuation of the entire city of Fort McMurray, Alberta; the body of a suspected gang member was washed up on the shore in Brooklyn, wrapped in plastic wrap and duct tape and his feet encased in cement; the GOP continued to divide between pro- and anti-Donald Trump factions as the reality show star continued his seemingly unstoppable march to the Republican presidential nomination; a swarm of small earthquakes has shaken the area around Mount St Helens in Washington state, stoking fears of another eruption of the volcano that devastated the surrounding region when it exploded in 1980; and the British arctic research ship dubbed "Boaty McBoatface" in online voting will be named instead for famed broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough ... although the vessel's remotely-operated submarine will be called by the crowdsourced name.
Enjoy the cartoons ... it's a long way to November.
For this week, as we move out of a chilly, wet spring into what will probably be a long, hot summer made more unbearable by continuous waves of political hot air, I thought we'd look at some cartoons on the summer ritual dreaded by many modern women ...
And here I thought that the whole thing about women shaving only went back to the late 70's or so ...
The whole process can take a while ...
And even nature can get into the act ...
Men and women look at danger and pain differently ...
Well, that's one way of looking on the bright side ...
Uh, oh ...
From the backhanded compliments department ...
Sauce for the gander? ...
So that's how this all got started ...
Why, indeed? ...
Just for the record, ladies, as a fellow who went to college in the late 60's and early 70's, I don't especially care if you shave or not. Just sayin'.
It's going to be a fairly bleak weekend, weather-wise ... yesterday here in NoVa we had pouring rain and temperatures in the low 50's all day, today the rain will continue but not be constant, and tomorrow for Mothers' Day we may have some partial sunshine and warmer temperatures, which will be welcome. The rain stopping will also give me a chance to move more stuff out of the rented storage unit we're abandoning (see that discussion here), and spruce up my garden.
Have a good day and a great weekend. More thoughts tomorrow.

Great cartoons!
These cartoons say it all about shaving and waxing.
I saw a bumper sticker: Kentucky girls don't wax.
I had no idea there were so many women shaving cartoons. Great collection!
Have a great weekend, Bilbo!
Shaved, waxed, or not .......the woman's choice. Only a jerk would quibble with the view.
The heck with that lemonade stand. Set up a waxing stand in front of your house. You can generate a little retirement income.
Sounds like a winner!
Elvis, you're a man after my own heart!
Mike, I'll need an assistant ... you in?
