Cartoon Saturday

Welcome to May ...

As if we didn't have enough trouble, Iran is acting up again, threatening commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and leading the US Navy to begin escorting American-flagged ships through the dangerous waters; the death of a young black man in police custody led to an outbreak of rioting, looting, arson, and assaults in Baltimore; an enormous earthquake in Nepal has left thousands of people dead and many thousands more injured and/or homeless; a police report says that the late British television star Jimmy Savile, once one of the most beloved men in Britain and now one of the most reviled, may have sexually abused at least 22 students at a school for troubled girls; and professional political blowhard and presidential wannabe Ted Cruz has accused President Obama of "inflaming racial tensions" in America while in office.

Bring on the cartoons ... not as if we need them after a week like this.

I'm not sure how it is in other countries (although I've seen them in Mexico), but here in the US of A we have a bunch of huge "warehouse stores" where you can buy things for very low prices if you buy them in very large quantities. Costco is one such chain, Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club are others. This week, our theme cartoons deal with the adventure of shopping at warehouse stores ...

When you're on the trail for weeks at a time, it sometimes pays to buy your staples in bulk ...

You can usually buy a pallet of toilet paper rolls, or ...

I thought this one was a clever take ...

These stores aren't for the birds ...

And the express lane takes on a whole new meaning when you shop at one of these clubs, where nobody ever leaves with just one ... or two ... or 30 things ...

Even mad scientists and their assistants can find good bargains ...

Moving on to other topics, this week the Supreme Court waded into the ugly minefield of arguments for and against same-sex marriage. I don't think anyone is neutral on the issue, and some are more ... disturbed ... than others ...

As we brace ourselves for the trauma of the presidential election, one thing you know for sure is that nobody is going to promise to raise your taxes. In fact, in any election throughout history, people have gotten elected by promising exactly the opposite, whether it makes sense or not ...

I just couldn't pass this one up ...

And finally, we were all young, once ...

There you have it, Dear Readers, the first Cartoon Saturday for the month of May. Can you believe that we're nearly halfway through 2015? Oy ...

It promises to be a nice weekend here in NoVa, so perhaps I can get some yard work done before the homeowners' association comes by to burn me at the stake. Keep your fingers crossed.

Have a good day and a great weekend. Come back tomorrow for Poetry Sunday. More thoughts then.

I am a card carrying member of Costco, and I have to really be careful about the quantity buying thing. Some items are just toooo bulky. Fun to poke at these warehouse stores. Have a productive weekend in the yard, Bilbo.

I keep thinking about joining Costco. Maybe when I empty out a room or two to get some more space.

I was a member years ago. The quantities were just too big for a single guy and now that I'm married, they are still too big. Great cartoons this week!
