And a new month begins ...

Pharmaceutical giant Merck announced on Friday that it will soon ask health officials in the U.S. and around the world to authorize use of its experimental Covid-19 pill, which tests showed reduced hospitalizations and deaths by half in people recently infected with the deadly virus; after a delay of nearly three years, Japan's Princess Mako will marry her fiancé, who is a commoner, in October; the governors of five midwestern states have announced a plan called called REV Midwest (the Regional Electric Vehicle Midwest Coalition) to build a new network for charging electric vehicles; SCOTUS Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh has tested positive for Covid-19, and is distraught to learn that beer is no more effective than Ivermectin as a treatment; and Christmas may be the latest victim of economic and supply chain woes, with toy retailers unable to stock shelves because toy shipments from China are being delayed by shortages of shipping containers and backlogs of unloading at ports.

Today is the first of five Saturdays in October, and in line with tradition we will focus each of our Cartoon Saturdays during Halloween month on a particular source of fright ... no, not the thought of a new GOP presidency, but the lesser terrors we wish were real, instead. Today, we focus on a terrible, rampaging gigantic beast - not Der Furor, but Godzilla ...

And so ends our first Cartoon Saturday for October, and the first of our annual festival of cartoons featuring the non-political things that terrify us. Next Saturday, we look at one of the most famous of the monsters - Dr Frankenstein's creation.
