Cartoon Saturday

Yes, we really need the cartoons this week ...

A 25-year-old contractor working for the National Security Agency has been arrested and charged with leaking a top-secret document on Russian election meddling to an online media outlet; a Chinese dairy company is looking for its chief financial officer, who disappeared along with $357 million of company funds; chickens came home to roost in Iran, where a spate of bombing and shooting attacks left many people dead and injured; Donald Trump engaged in yet another Twitter spat with a US ally, heaping abuse on the mayor of London for his actions during the terrorist attack on London Bridge; and in Pennsylvania, a man was arrested and charged with attempting to strangle his new bride in an argument over the division of money they'd received as wedding gifts.

For no particular reason, I thought it would be fun to offer a collection of cartoons about Cinderella this week ...

I dance the same way ...

As puns go, this one is pretty good ...

I've been to mechanics like this ...

Same mechanic, different day ...

Parking in the wrong part of the forest ...

Oh, oh ...

If you thought it was hard to park a Hummer, how about a giant pumpkin? ...

There can be problems when reconciling different backgrounds ...

Bwa, ha, haaaaa!! ...

It can be tough living up to past glory ...

And we're off into the weekend! I'll be spending the day helping my daughter and her husband finish building their chicken coop ... although my contribution to the actual construction will consist mostly of manual labor and appropriate sound effects, as I have no construction talent whatsoever. The coop will, however, have a world-class woodburned sign on it ... that, I'm good at.

Have a good day and a great weekend. More thoughts tomorrow, when Musical Sunday returns.

I'm glad that got cleared up ...

It's a different approach to bomb detection ...

Gender issues in the California legislature ...

Well, at least now they won't feel any pressure to take them down ...

I believe this is one of the providers the GOP is looking toward to control costs in their "replacement" for Obamacare ...

No, thanks ...

I imagine the live green bananas are more expensive ...

Enhances the decor of any bathroom ...

Don't let Trump find out ...

And there you have it - our first collection of editorial and signage gems for June. I hope you enjoyed them. Be sure to come back tomorrow for Cartoon Saturday - more thoughts then.

Privatizing the Government

Donald Trump, coming as he does from a business background, believes that a profit-driven business approach will provide better and more responsive government than the traditional model of public service. In particular, he seems enamored of the idea (shared by many traditional and non-traditional Republicans) that much of the structure and many of the services provided to citizens by the government should be "privatized" - that is, contracted out to commercial entities which, driven by the desire to maximize profits, will manage them better than a traditional government staff. For example, he has proposed to turn the nation's air traffic control system over to a private contractor, believing that it will be better-run and technologically more up-to-date.

I personally think this is hogwash, but then, I wasn't elected to run the government*. I'm also quite sure that my conservative and - especially - libertarian friends will be chomping at the proverbial bit to see this done. But let's take it to the logical conclusion ... let's outsource the whole cabinet and let commercial, for-profit companies run it. Here's what my sources tell me are the various places Mr Trump might outsource your government:

Department of State: The Heritage Foundation.

Department of the Treasury: Goldman Sachs.

Department of Defense: Lockheed Martin.

Department of Justice: CoreCivic.

Department of the Interior: Peabody Energy.

Department of Agriculture: Monsanto.

Department of Commerce: will be eliminated. There's no need for it since everyone cheats America on trade, anyhow.

Department of Labor: Kelly Services.

Department of Heath and Human Services: A consortium of Merck, Pfizer, and GlaxoSmithKline. Martin Shkreli and Heather Bresch are the leading candidates to head the department.

Department of Housing and Urban Development: The Trump Organization.

Department of Transportation: United Airlines.

Department of Energy: ExxonMobil.

Department of Education: will be eliminated. In the post-truth era, there's no point in maintaining wasteful and unnecessary agencies.

Department of Veterans' Affairs: will be combined with the Department of Health and Human Services, then quietly ignored because it does not generate revenue and simply wastes money on irresponsible people who don't have health insurance.

Department of Homeland Security: The National Rifle Association.

That's how I think it's shaping up in the mind of Mr Trump and his business-oriented administration ... what are your thoughts? Leave a comment and let me know.

Have a good day. More thoughts tomorrow, when we revisit Great Moments in Editing and Signage.

Your Papers, Please. No, Not Those ... Better Ones.

Well, as if I didn't have enough other things to worry about, it now seems that my Virginia drivers license will soon no longer considered acceptable as identification according to the federal "Real ID" guidelines. Sigh.

For the benefit of my readers who live in other countries, the United States does not have any sort of national identification card or internal passport. Because most Americans drive, the driver's license - which is issued by each state, rather than by the federal government - has become the de facto standard form of identification when we need to confirm our identity. As part of the general tightening of national identification requirements after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, Congress passed the "Real ID" guidelines* to mandate improved security of drivers licenses and related personal identification cards (such as cards issued by state motor vehicle authorities which prove ones identity but do not authorize operation of a car). In general, the law says that a Real ID-compliant form of identification must show:

• The full legal name of the bearer;
• The bearer's signature;
• The bearer's gender and date of birth;
• A unique identifying number;
• The bearer's principal residence address; and,
• A front-facing photograph of the bearer.

In addition, Real-ID compliant cards must also contain security features to prevent tampering, counterfeiting, or duplication of the document, and must present all data in a common, machine-readable format (such as bar codes or smart card technology).

The law also clamps down on the type of proof of identification required to ... uh ... obtain proof of identification ... before a Real-ID compliant identification card can be issued, the applicant must provide the following:

• A photo ID, or a non-photo ID that includes full legal name and birthdate;
• Documentation of the applicant's birth date;
• Documentation of the applicant's legal status and Social Security number; and,
• Documentation showing the applicant's name and principal residence address.

Yes, Dear Readers, you have to be able to convincingly and legally prove who you are in order to obtain a card that will enable you to convincingly and legally prove who you are.

The change to our Virginia driver's licenses won't affect my ability to travel because I also have a military ID card and a valid US passport, but I feel sorry for all the people who don't have easy access to the type of documentation the law requires.

Welcome to modern America.

Have a good day, whether you can prove your identity or not. More thoughts tomorrow.

Speaking of Language ...

Thanks to my undergraduate degree in Linguistics and my lifelong interest in foreign languages, I was drawn to an article to which my friend Mary posted a link not long ago: Meet the Linguists: the New French Government Is Packing Some Pretty Intimidating Skills. The point of the article was that not only does French president Emmanuel Macron speak perfect English*, but almost all the senior members of his government speak at least one, and often several foreign languages fluently.

I realize that the linguistic skill of the senior officials of the French government probably doesn't interest the average American, but it should ... particularly when you think about it in the context of other things in the news, such as this: With State Budget in Crisis, Many Oklahoma Schools Hold Classes Four Days a Week. When classes are held only four days a week, what are the subjects that tend to drop off the schedule? Music, art ... and foreign languages. There is ample reason to question the educational preparation of many Americans nowadays, but there's really no reason to make the situation worse.

As you probably know if you've been reading this blog for very long, I speak German ... not quite as well as I did when we were actually living in Germany, but well enough to converse on most topics with native speakers of the language. I can tell you from long experience that people in Germany were amazed to find an American who actually spoke their language beyond the stock tourist phrases seeking the location of beer, toilets, or train stations.

The ability to speak a language other than your own is a priceless asset when traveling, or when trying to understand the positions and opinions of other nations. As the "Meet the Linguists" article pointed out ...

"Where a thorough command of a language does help is when it comes to questions of cultural understanding. The linguistic skills of Macron’s ministers attest to their ability to empathise with their interlocutors and to understand their cultural, historical and social hinterland."

In an era of jingoistic "America First" attitudes, many Americans insist that there's no need to learn a foreign language ... everyone speaks English, after all, and if they don't, they should. But as America draws back like a turtle into its protective shell, there are a lot of other languages out there that are being studied as new powers arise - languages like Chinese and Russian - and languages that are being studied because of changes in the cultural makeup of nations - languages like Spanish and Arabic. You may believe in "America First," but if you want to get other nations to listen to you and take you seriously, making an effort to meet them halfway by learning their languages is not a bad idea.

Ich wünsche Euch einen recht schönen Tag. Neue Bemerkungen werden Morgen erscheinen.

DUMBCON Update

If you’re a first-time visitor to my blog, you may want to take a moment and look up to the upper left corner of the screen, where the “DUMBCON Level” is noted. Here’s the history of that notice … and word of the latest update.

Back in July of 2009 I realized that things in America had become so stupid that there was a need for a scale with which to measure the national stupidity level. I used as my model the five-stage “Defense Condition" (or "DEFCON") scale used by the military services to set their level of readiness in response to world conditions. I called my scale the National Stupidity Condition Index, or DUMBCON, and set the level at DUMBCON 1.

The original DUMBCON structure served well until January of 2013, when I found it necessary to add a sixth level – DUMBCON 0 - to accommodate surging levels of national stupidity.

But such was the ever-increasing degree of stupidity that I was forced, a mere ten months later, to add a seventh level – DUMBCON -1.

Less than three years later, on December 21st of 2016, in response to the ludicrous chicanery of the presidential campaign and its results, I added an eighth level – DUMBCON -2.

Since that unhappy time I have been sorely tempted to add a ninth level, but I’ve always talked myself out of it. I've tried to be optimistic and positive, figuring that things just had to get better … but I have finally accepted - after less than six months - that the country I love has grown so appallingly stupid that eight levels of stupidity are no longer enough to measure it.

With that sad fact in mind, I have decided to modify the DUMBCON scale to add DUMBCON MINUS THREE - a much-needed ninth level*.

Here is the new DUMBCON scale, effective immediately:

And here is the updated explanation of each level ...

DUMBCON 5 (Code Green) - ordinary, day-to-day level of stupidity. Congress is in session; people continue to listen to rap music; companies plaster all sorts of warning labels on products in an attempt to avoid lawsuits from people injured through their own stupidity.

DUMBCON 4 (Code Blue) - things are more stupid than usual. Congress berates the Defense Department for wasting money, but insists on keeping open military installations which are not needed, but are located in the districts of key lawmakers.

DUMBCON 3 (Code Yellow) - things are getting pretty stupid. People continue to deny the Holocaust. Kim Jong-un petulantly launches a few more missiles because he's not getting what he wants.

DUMBCON 2 (Code Magenta) - start shaking your head - it's getting really stupid out there. People keep paying attention to clueless blowhards like Ann Coulter and Alex Jones. Crazy persons use firearms to kill large numbers of people, and the NRA says that the guns are irrelevant to the discussion, that killer would still kill people even if they didn't have guns - they'd just smother them with pillows or something. Ninety-seven percent of serious scientists agree that climate change is a real threat, but conservatives refuse to accept it because "the science isn't settled."

DUMBCON 1 (Code Orange) - stupidity beyond your wildest dreams. Go back to bed and hide under the pillows. Businesses increase prices because of "increased costs," but your employer wants you to accept wage cuts and IOUs or he'll send your jobs to Mexico. The GOP thunders about the immediate need to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act, but its proposed replacement – the so-called “American Health Care Act” – is worse. Congress goes into recess, having accomplished nothing ... and nobody notices.

DUMBCON 0 (Code Red) - A level of stupidity far exceeding your worst nightmares. People wholeheartedly buy into ludicrous conspiracy theories that even the least-educated, religiously hidebound person in the Middle East wouldn't accept; local sheriffs announce that they will decide on their own authority which laws are constitutional and will be enforced; and people actually believe that a government that can't even pass a budget - or agree on anything at all - will somehow be able to get its act together enough to confiscate weapons from the most heavily-armed population on earth.

DUMBCON -1 (Code Scarlet) - A level of stupidity so far exceeding your worst nightmares that all you can do is hide under the bed and pray. Ultra-conservative members of Congress sincerely believe nothing bad would happen if the government defaults on its debts; Congress, egged on by the far-right wing of the GOP, throws hundreds of thousands of government workers out without pay while forcing others to work without any guarantee that they’ll ever be paid ... but insists that the Constitution says members of Congress must continue to be paid no matter what; and the House, the Senate, and the President unite to replace Italian government as the poster child for dysfunctional rule.

DUMBCON -2 (Code Brown) – A level of stupidity that makes you wonder who comes up with all this s**t. Americans elect a manifestly unqualified megalomaniac as president and accept that he plans to govern via Twitter rants, 140 characters at a time. Courtesy and civility have almost completely disappeared from public discourse. Credulous Americans accept without the least shred of proof the most outrageous and improbable of conspiracy theories, and believe only “news” presented by organizations and websites that confirm their own outlandish beliefs.

DUMBCON -3 (Code Black) – Hiding under the bed and praying is no longer enough; it’s time to invest in a seat on Elon Musk's planned one-way manned expedition to Mars. Citing false and misinterpreted data and statistics, Donald Trump pulls the country out of the Paris Climate Accords, after returning from an overseas trip in which he gratuitously insulted allies and cozied up to authoritarian rulers. A ranting right-wing moron in Oregon murders two men who tried to keep him from assaulting two young women because were Muslims, and Donald Trump calls it "unacceptable." A Republican congressman from Michigan says there’s no need for science-based policy measures because God can take care of any climate change problems. The last shreds of courtesy and civility have disappeared from public discourse.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, we are going to DUMBCON Minus Three.

God help us.

Have as good a day as you can. More thoughts tomorrow.

Poetry Sunday

I really enjoy cooking, which makes it a happy coincidence that I also enjoy grocery shopping. I love going to farmers' markets, butcher shops, Penzey's Spices, supermarkets, and all the other places where you can find colorful displays of great ingredients waiting to be turned into something good to eat. Today's poem by Linda Pastan is full of great imagery of the marketplace ...

Market Day
by Linda Pastan

We have traveled all this way
to see the real France:
these trays of apricots and grapes spilled out
like semi-precious stones
for us to choose; a milky way
of cheeses whose names like planets
I forget; heraldic sole
displayed on ice, as if the fish
themselves had just escaped,
leaving their scaled armor behind.
There's nothing like this
anywhere, you say. And I see
Burnside Avenue in the Bronx, my mother
sending me for farmer cheese and lox:
the rounds of cheese grainy and white, pocked
like the surface of the moon;
the silken slices of smoked fish
lying in careful pleats; and always,
as here, sawdust under our feet
the color of sand brought in on pant cuffs
from Sunday at the beach.
Across the street on benches,
my grandparents lifted their faces
to the sun the way the blind turn
towards a familiar sound, speaking
another language I almost understand.

Have a good day. Enjoy the grocery shopping, which is one of life's little pleasures.

More thoughts tomorrow.

Cartoon Saturday

If you though May was bad, wait 'til you see June ...

Ignoring the advice of scientists, business leaders, and the Secretaries of State and Defense, Donald Trump announced this week that he will pull the United States out of the Paris Accords on climate change; in an unusual comment, Russian president Vladimir Putin suggested that "patriotic" Russian hackers, not connected with his government, might have tried to interfere with the US presidential election; 38-year-old Leo Varadkar, the first gay man and youngest person ever to hold the position, is set to become the Republic of Ireland's next prime minister; a man who wanted to “bring down big medicine business and big pharmacy” and didn’t plan to leave until he’d met with Donald Trump was arrested at the Trump International Hotel in Washington with an AR-15 rifle, a handgun and more than 90 rounds of ammunition; and fired FBI director James Comey is scheduled to testify before Congress in the coming week, although the White House is said to be considering invoking "executive privilege" to prevent him from testifying.

This week, in honor of all the hysteria about investigations, inquiries, special counsels, open and closed testimony, and the like, our cartoons deal with law, lawyers, and courtrooms ...

Putting quotation marks - air or print - around your words isn't always the best course of action ...

It's important to define your terms, especially in Washington ...

If you watch the shouting heads on TV, you get the same thing ...

Kellyanne Conway for the defense ...

It does make finding an impartial jury a bit more difficult ...

It's a beautiful dream ...

The high cost of good legal representation can lead to alternative defense strategies ...

For high-profile cases, you want a law firm of long standing and experience ...

This one sums up how I feel about the whole cesspool of Russian meddling, e-mails, private servers, collusion, etc ...

This really ought to be an option ...

I hope you enjoyed this timely collection of cartoons, because gawd knows we have little enough to laugh about lately.

It looks as if it will be a beautiful weekend here in NoVa, good for long walks, yard work, and generally enjoying the great outdoors. After all the rain we've had lately (which, of course, we really needed), it will be nice to go out without an umbrella for a change.

Have a good day and a great weekend. More thoughts tomorrow, when Poetry Sunday returns.

The Right-Cheek Ass Clown for June, 2017

It's a new month, and that means there are three more opportunities* to heap scorn and dishonor on ass clowns whose actions have risen above the bar ... which I need to keep raising because of the vast number of eminently-qualified candidates. To start the month of June, I've decided to focus on not one, but two dishonorees.

I have decided to name as

The Right-Cheek Ass Clown
for
June, 2017

two all-time champion groveling lickspittles,

Vice President Mike Pence

and

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt

When Donald Trump announced on June 1st that he would pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Accords, he was introduced by Vice President Pence, whose comments set a new record for obsequious fawning, even for Mr Trump's staff. Here are a few excerpts:

"You know it's the greatest privilege of my life to serve as vice president to a president who is fighting every day to make America great again."

"Since the first day of this administration President Donald Trump has been working tirelessly ..."

"... just last week, we all witnessed the bold leadership of an American president on the world stage ..."

"... with gratitude for his leadership and admiration for his unwavering commitment to the American people, it is now my high honor and distinct privilege to introduce to all of you the president ..."

After Mr Trump's speech (in which he asked us to "believe me" six times), he introduced EPA administrator Scott Pruitt, who did his best to outdo the Vice President in slavish praise of his boss. Here are a few of his comments:

"Please know that I am thankful for your fortitude, your courage, and your steadfastness as you serve and lead our country."

"America finally has a leader who answers only to the people — not to the special interests ..."

"You’re a champion for the hardworking citizens all across this land ..."

"... it takes courage, it takes commitment to say no to the plaudits of men while doing what’s right by the American people. You have that courage, and the American people can take comfort because you have their backs."

There was no need for the Vice President to introduce Mr Trump's address, let alone using such servile language. And there was no need to have Mr Pruitt heap praise on Mr Trump following that address. The only reason for the appearance of both men was to stoke the ego of a narcissistic chief executive who demands absolute loyalty and expects extravagant praise for his every action.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, for their fawning servility in service of a manifestly unqualified leader, Vice President Mike Pence and EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt are jointly named as the Right-Cheek Ass Clown for June, 2017. Nothing more needs to be said.

Have a good day, and come back tomorrow for Cartoon Saturday - more thoughts then.

Covfefe

In case you've been hiding in a cave in Outer Mongolia for the last few days, here are two tweets from Donald Trump, sent yesterday, separated by six hours ...

I have no idea what "covfefe" means other than a minimum of 18 points in a game of Scrabble, nor do I care. All I can say is that it makes about as much sense as anything else Mr Trump says. At the moment, I'm totally consumed with trying to identify tomorrow's Right Cheek Ass Clown for June, and it's driving me crazy.

Have a good day, and come back tomorrow to see who I finally pick. More thoughts then.
