Musical Sunday

This week, as we view the needless devastation wreaked on Ukraine by the unprovoked Russian invasion, it's time to call up the Parody Project again, this time to remind us of what Putin's war has done not just to Ukraine, but to Russia ...

They do, indeed, call the state "Paraiah." At least, those with souls and consciences do ... which leaves out Fox News and many Republicans.

Have a good day and enjoy the rest of your weekend. Be grateful you don't live in Ukraine, or under a regime that supports the horrific aggression. Yet.

More thoughts coming.

Cartoon Saturday

How the hell many weeks are there going to be in this verkakte month? ...

A Chinese airliner crashed into a remote mountain after a near-vertical dive, leaving no survivors; having encountered unexpectedly furious opposition to its invasion of independent Ukraine, Russia announced that the "first phase" of its "special military operation" was over and it would concentrate on conquering and occupying the eastern part of Ukraine that it's dominated since 2014, anyhow; at a NATO summit in Brussels, President Biden announced that the United States will take in up to 100,000 refugees from Ukraine; Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson faced two days of relentless political badgering from Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee as her nomination to the Supreme Court was considered; and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, who passed away this week at the age of 84, once described Russian President Vladimir Putin as "small and pale" and "so cold as to be almost reptilian*."

This week, in honor of the birthday this past Tuesday of legendary mime Marcel Marceau**, we return (at least for now) to a Cartoon Saturday theme and shine the light on - what else? - mimes ...

Well, of course he would be ...

Perpetual motion! ...

Good guess ...

Mimes' leashes ...

It would certainly be appropriate ...

Mimes don't make good rodeo stars ...

Uh, oh ...

It's a new event ...

A lot of people ought to be able to put themselves on silent mode ...

Everybody's gotta start someplace ...

And that's the way it is for this last full week of March, 2022. I hope the cartoons helped you cope with it. Have a good day and a great weekend. More thoughts coming.

* A description that would also apply to a lot of Republican politicians here at home.

** And also as a gentle suggestion that a lot of Republican members of Congress ought to just shut the hell up.

The Left-Cheek Ass Clown for March, 2022

There isn't much competition this period for the award, and much to say ... so let's get to it.

The Left-Cheek Ass Clown Award for March, 2022

is presented as a group award to

The Republican Members
of the
Senate Judiciary Committee:

Chuck Grassley (R, IA)
Lindsey Graham (R, SC)
John Kennedy (R, LA)
Mike Lee (R, UT)
Rafael "Ted" Cruz (R, TX)
Ben Sasse (R, NE)
Thom Tillis (R, NC)
John Cornyn (R, TX)
Josh Hawley (R, MO)
Tom Cotton (R, AR)
and
Marsha Blackburn (R, TN)

Political commentators Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein wrote in 2012 that “The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.” Ten years later, that assessment was borne out by the disgraceful behavior of the Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee when they engaged in two days of shameful and fact-free berating of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, one of the most qualified persons - of any race or gender - ever nominated to the Supreme Court.

In a farcical display of petty grandstanding and grievance airing, the eleven GOP members of the Judiciary Committee spent hour after hour selectively quoting (or misquoting, or outright ignoring) facts, statistics and the writings of Judge Jackson. They made not the least attempt to approach difficult issues with nuance and understanding, seeking only to amass sound bites to rouse the right-wing media and the MAGA crowds. They repeatedly interrupted and spoke over Judge Jackson in a shameful parade of bullying, faux-righteous anger and nonsensical comments designed not to examine the unquestioned qualifications of a nominee to the nation's highest court, but to score cheap political points, advance a culture war agenda in the absence of actual policy ideas, and position themselves to appeal to the most radical and angry elements of the extreme right during the upcoming midterm elections and the 2024 presidential campaign season.

At the outset of the hearings, each of the Republicans piously assured Judge Jackson that she would not be subjected to what they claimed was the degrading and unfair treatment of previous Republican nominees to the court ... and then proceeded to do exactly that. It set up two days of the most disgraceful character assassination and ignorance ever displayed by even the most crass members of a party increasingly known for its lack of empathy, low ethical standards, and basic understanding of the most fundamental legal or Constitutional issues.

The eleven Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have shown themselves to be among the worst representatives of the worst of America. It's difficult to decide which are worse: these eleven disgraceful political clowns, or the voters who elected them to an institution once known for careful deliberation and public service.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, the eleven Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are presented a group award as the Left-Cheek Ass Clown for March, 2022. It's a sad day for the nation.

But wait - there's more.

Dishonorable mention is also presented to the Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who - with the notable and honorable exception of Senator Cory Booker (D, NJ) - failed to push back against the despicable treatment meted out to Judge Jackson. Their shameful lack of willingness to defend the Judge against the brutal and nauseatingly cynical attacks of the Republican members mark a sad nadir in the  common decency we generally expect of today's Democrats.

Have a good day, and come back tomorrow when we'll try to lighten up a dismal week with a collection of cartoons honoring something many Republican members of Congress ought to try ... silence.

More thoughts then.

Poetry Sunday

As the weather gets better and spring claws its way back from winter's angry grip, we can get out and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine more often. And, as Gene Guntzel points out in this week's poem, you never know who you might meet on the way ...

Go For a Brisk Walk
by Gene Guntzel

Go for a brisk walk every day
Either around dawn or sunset
And you may run into Chopin or Monet,
Charlotte Bronte or a mysterious brunette
Who turns out to be Maria Callas.
Bessie Smith, Jack Benny, you never knew,
The Duke of Earl slipping away from the palace,
Kafka and his fiancée strolling in the snow.
Melville whose book you meant to read,
Cornelius Vanderbilt, Princess Diana, Van Gogh,
Out walking, despite all they’ve been through.
“To comprehend a nectar requires sorest need,”
Said Emily Dickinson. (She’s here, too.)
Life is hard. Oh Lord, the miseries we bear
And yet it’s good to get out in the open air.

Have a good day and enjoy the rest of your weekend ... preferably while enjoying a nice walk.

More thoughts coming.

Cartoon Saturday

And another week spirals down the great drain of history ...

The Russian invasion of Ukraine continued this week, even as Ukrainian resistance stiffened, economic sanctions crushed the Russian economy, and Arnold Schwarzenegger recorded a heartfelt plea to the Russian people; in Texas, nine people, including six members of a college golf team and their coach, were killed when a pickup truck driven by a 13-year-old (who also died) rammed their van head-on; legislation to make Daylight Savings Time effective year-round passed the Senate by unanimous consent, the Senate obviously having nothing better to do; WNBA star Brittney Greiner remains jailed in Russia on alleged drug charges; and in Houston, a man who fired a gun in a restaurant failed to note that one of the other diners was an Ultimate Fighting Championship MMA competitor who disarmed him and placed him in a "rear-naked choke" until police arrived.

Yep - this week, it's random cartoons again ...

I could get a lot of use out of this hashtag ...

Yep, must be ...

I've noticed those symptoms, too ... they're also associated with trying to stay informed on the news ...

The best government money can buy, that's what we have ....

I have about seven of those a week ...

People who get their "news" from Fox, OANN, RT, and Newsmax should take note ...

Well, I guess he's "technically" right ...

That's how it works, isn't it? ...

So, how DO you adjust an hourglass? ...

I hope they resolve their supply chain issue soon ... the primaries are coming up, and lots of other red states are drafting crazy legislation ...

And that's it for this week. Have a good day and a great weekend, and come back tomorrow for another Poetry Sunday. More thoughts then.

Great Moments in Editing and Signage

Here we go again ...

When you really need a specialist ...

Why, the sneaky little buggers ...

At my age, yes, there are times I would sell my soul for a nearby toilet ...

I think they may have been using the wrong sensor ...

Um ...

Last I heard, they're still waiting ...

Honesty in tagging ...

The latest tactic in the voter suppression movement ... confusing the election dates ...

Redistricting gone amok ...

I'm not sure if they need a new sign painter or a new produce manager ...

And that's it for this edition of Great Moments in Editing and Signage; I hope it helped you cope with some of the craziness of the past week.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for Cartoon Saturday! More thoughts then.

Musical Sunday

There's a long tradition of anti-war sentiment in folk music. Classic examples are Pete Seeger's classics "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," and "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon and the Animals. Another song that has long been one of my favorites is this one by Uriah Heep. This video contains the lyrics (which can be difficult to make out) and subtitles in Russian ... my Russian is not good enough to know how accurate the translation is, but the song is appropriate for this evil time in history.

Have a good day and enjoy the rest of your weekend. Did you remember to turn your clocks forward for Daylight Savings Time (if applicable)?

More thoughts coming.

Cartoon Saturday

There just aren't enough cartoons to blunt the agony of some weeks ...

Russia continued its "special military operation" in Ukraine, relentlessly pounding both military and civilian targets in an apparent attempt to cover military ineptitude with sheer violence; Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for foreign volunteers to fight alongside his army in Ukraine; North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorne called heroic Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinskyy a "thug" and said of the government of embattled Ukraine that it is "incredibly corrupt, and it is incredibly evil and it has been pushing woke ideologies;" a New York judge rejected an attempt by Der Furor to countersue against a rape accuser’s defamation claims as being "in bad faith;" and at the San Ysidro border crossing from Mexico into California, a man was arrested when customs officials discovered 52 live reptiles (nine snakes and 43 horned lizards) in plastic bags hidden on the man's body.

This week, because the last two weeks of no-theme cartoons has gone so well, we'll do another week of random cartoons ...

It's a lot easier to be wired informant nowadays ...

My weather app looks like this all the time ...

It's funny, but now I can't unsee it ...

Prehistoric paywall ...

That is going to require some very serious magic ...

Jokes about doctors' handwriting aren't as timely any more ... now we need cartoons about doctors' poor keyboarding skills ...

Supply chain woes are causing trouble everywhere ...

Like I said ...

Look who's hanging around schoolyards in Texas, Tennessee, and Florida ...

Why, indeed? ...

And that's it for today ... I hope I've given you a slight respite from the relentless bad news of the week.

Have a good day and a great weekend. More thoughts tomorrow, when Musical Sunday returns.

The Right-Cheek Ass Clown for March, 2022

This was the week I almost gave up. It was the week the worldwide degree of ass clownery nearly broke the Gohmert Stupidity Scale, the week that levels of cynical hypocrisy rose to heights almost unmatched in the annals of shamelessness.

This was the week I finally threw up my hands, unable to single out any individual or group worthy of receiving the award. I considered just a general award to "The Whole Insane World," but decided to just present not a group award, but a group of individual awards to some of the most hopelessly crazy ass clowns of the past week. Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers,

The Right-Cheek Ass Clown Award for March, 2022

is presented - not as a joint award, but as separate individual awards - to the following FIVE recipients:

The Republican Party

for its deliberate undermining of national and international security and presidential leadership in a stunning example of the most cynical and hypocritical political backstabbing in American history. This is the ninth solo award for the GOP and its fifteenth overall (counting shared awards), and also earns a Gohmert Stupidity Scale score of 350,000 ghm;

The "Freedom Convoy"

a group of truckers enraged by the horrific assault on their freedoms represented by mask and vaccine mandates who wasted thousands of gallons of diesel fuel (now at a near-all-time high price) by driving across the country to parade aimlessly around the DC Beltway, making no particular impact on the usual sucky traffic there while making themselves look like tantrum-pitching children when compared to the actual tyranny occurring in besieged Ukraine. They also earn a Gohmert Stupidity Scale score of 250,000 ghm;

Der Furor

for one of the most amazingly incoherent and nonsensical response to a question about the situation in Ukraine one could ever imagine. This is the fourteenth award for Der Furor, and includes the Ass Clown of the Year award in 2015 the Lifetime Achievement award issued in 2017 (which was rescinded in 2020 in the face of unrelenting ass clownery and general moral disgrace) and also earns a Gohmert Stupidity Scale score of 2,999,999 ghm;

Senator Lindsey Graham (R, SC)

for pitching a world-class hissy fit because his preferred candidate for the Supreme Court seat to be vacated by Justice Breyer was not nominated by the President. This was Senator Graham's fifth award, and earns a Gohmert Stupidity Scale reading of 200,000 ghm; and, of course,

Russian President Vladimir Putin

for launching a terrifyingly unnecessary and brutal war on the independent nation of Ukraine in furtherance of his personal grievances, hatreds, and imagined need to restore the glory of Russia ... which he has forever tarnished while burying the nation under crushing sanctions and world opprobrium. It is his fourth award, and earns a Gohmert Stupidity Scale score of 3,000,000 ghm.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, I could easily have added scores of other recipients to this list today, but in the interest of brevity and sanity, I have limited it to these five. They deserve the scorn and disgust of all decent human beings.

Have a good day. See you tomorrow for Cartoon Saturday. More thoughts then.

Poetry Sunday

Many are the days I enjoy looking at old photographs and reliving the memories of happier times. We usually have a rosy view of a past that was far more complicated than we choose to remember, but there is also joy and hope to be found there, if not the thousand clear answers to everything.

Among His Effects We Found a Photograph
by Ed Ochester

My mother is beautiful as a flapper.
She is so in love
that she has been gazing
secretly at my father
for forty years.
He's in uniform,
with puttees and swagger stick,
a tiny cork mustache
bobbing above a shoreline of teeth.
They are "poor but happy."
In his hand is a lost book
he had memorized,
with a thousand clear answers
to everything.

Have a good day and enjoy the rest of your weekend. The weather will be beautiful here in NoVa, and I hope to enjoy it in the fresh air and sunshine; I hope you will be able to do the same.

More thoughts coming.

Cartoon Saturday

Judging from the past week, if March were a fish, I'd have thrown it back already.

Russian forces invading Ukraine captured Europe's largest nuclear reactor, after a fire begun by Russian shelling was extinguished by Ukrainian firefighters; the President of the World Bank, David Malpass, described the war in Ukraine as an "economic catastrophe" that will cut global economic growth with particular pain on the poorest nations and individuals; South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham called on Russians to assassinate Vladimir Putin, suggesting it was the only way to end the invasion of Ukraine and related economic and political catastrophes; Florida governor Ron DeSantis berated a group of high school students wearing face masks at an indoor news conference, accusing them of “COVID theater;” and in Detroit, FBI agents arrested a TikTok star for committing a series of bank robberies, identifying him in part because of the distinctive shoes he wore in his TikTok videos ... which he described as "stick-up shoes."

This week, another collection of random cartoons ... no theme, just laughs (or groans, as you will) ...

In honor of the GOP's lack of policy clothing ...

This sounds right on target ...

You just can't make some people do the right thing ...

It can be hard to decide at this time of year ...

The way things used to be BT (before Twitter) ...

Some doctors just won't give up ...

There's a new season this year, and I predict the weather will be ... ugly ...

Oh, oh ...

It's a linguistically understandable mistake ...

A question being asked at income levels far above my own ...

Have a good day and a great weekend. See you tomorrow for Poetry Sunday ... more thoughts then.
