Cartoon Saturday

Geez ...

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to journalists Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia for their work defending freedom of expression in their countries; after weeks of bitter  negotiations the Senate passed a bill to increase the federal debt ceiling along party lines with a simple majority, and the House has agreed, kicking the can of fiscal disaster down the road to spoil the Christmas, rather than the Halloween season; a New Jersey man was sentenced to 160 years in prison after his conviction for using dating apps to lure and kill three women; President Biden has declined to invoke executive privilege to protect archived documents and records of Der Furor subpoenaed by the Congressional committee investigating the January 6th Capitol riot; and in Japan, 20 emus escaped from a farm in Kumamoto Prefecture, and eleven of them are still at large, seeking roles in upcoming Liberty Mutual insurance commercials.

This is Week 2 of our annual Cartoon Saturday celebration of Halloween and all things scary. Last Saturday, we looked at cartoons featuring Godzilla. Today, we visit the quintessential scary guy - Frankenstein's monster ...

MAD magazine took off on just about everything ... including the Frankenstein story ...

Dr Frankenstein meets The Wizard of Oz ...

It may not have worked, but it would have been worth a try ...

Tomato, tomahto ...

The kids always get a charge out of him ...

If only it were that easy ...

It's complicated ...

Bwa, ha, haaaaaa!! ...

Yes, that can be a problem in a relationship ...

I can really relate to this problem ...

And there you have it: our salute to the world's most famous self-made man. Well ... sort of ...

Have a good day and a great weekend, and come back tomorrow for Musical Sunday. More thoughts then.

The Right-Cheek Ass Clown for October, 2021

It's been a banner year for ass clownery, and we still have almost three months to go. The number of ass clowns and the superior quality (if you'll forgive me for expressing it that way) of their ass clownery is beyond amazing ... in place of the current Right-Cheek, Left-Cheek, and (in five-Friday months) On-Crack awards, I could probably announce AM and PM awards every day and still not keep up with the demand. It's what the military calls a "target-rich" environment (which itself is just a clever way of saying you're hopelessly outnumbered).

One option I have considered is that of presenting nothing but multiple or group awards in order to keep up. And that's what I've done this week, in which the obvious awardee is a group which has already received ten awards over the years ... plus two designations (in 2011 - the first year I presented an annual award - and 2017) as Ass Clown of the Year. Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, well-earned recognition as

The Right-Cheek Ass Clown for October, 2021

is bestowed - for the thirteenth time, including twice as Ass Clown of the Year - upon

The Republican Party

First, a disclaimer: my first vote for president was cast in 1972 for Richard Nixon, and I cast mostly party-line votes for Republicans until, in disgust at what the party had become, I voted for Democratic challenger John Kerry over George W. Bush in the 2004 election. I have voted exclusively for Democratic presidential candidates ever since, although in the past I occasionally voted for a Republican at the state or local level when I felt he or she was the better pick ... but it's been a long time since I was able to do that in good conscience.

Today's Republican party is an abomination and an affront to American values. While it likes to think of itself as "the party of Lincoln," it has become the party of Der Furor - petty, vindictive, self-important, and hungry for power at the expense of its dignity, honor, and sense of responsibility to the common welfare. As Thomas E. Mann and Norm Ornstein wrote in 2012,

“The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.”

The evidence of this is easy to see. Unable to campaign on ideas and policies which benefit ordinary Americans, the party desperately stirs up its base with hysterical warnings about trumped-up* threats while ruthlessly gerrymandering congressional districts and opposing voting rights legislation to ensure it remains in power despite its inability to win at the ballot box. It not only refuses to denounce, but indeed it spreads and offers encouragement to the wildest of conspiracy theories. Despite a complete, total lack of evidence, the defeat of every lawsuit, and the ignominious collapse of the touted Arizona "fraudit," elected Republicans at every level continue to insist that a vast program of fraud on a world-wide scale** stole an allegedly overwhelming electoral victory from Der Furor. It strongly supports complete religious freedom, but only for evangelical "Christians." It opposes abortion rights, but also opposes all programs which help families with small children. Despite a staggering gun death toll each year, it opposes even the tiniest restrictions on ownership of firearms. Despite the deaths of more than 700,000 Americans from Covid-19, it refuses to endorse vaccination and opposes simple actions (like wearing masks) which can help control the pandemic. The entire program of the Republican Party - to the extent it has one - is tax cuts for the wealthy and big business and the elimination of all regulations on big business. If it has any other ideas that benefit average Americans, it has hidden them well. As Jonathan Cone has observed,

“The incentive structure in conservative politics ... reward(s) the ability to generate outrage rather than the ability to deliver changes in policy. Power (has) been shifting more and more to the party’s most extreme and incendiary voices, whose great skill (is) in landing appearances on Hannity, not providing for their constituents.”

As I write this, Republicans in Congress refuse to compromise or negotiate with Democrats on any legislation. Indeed, they are using every tool at their disposal to bring the government to a crashing halt rather than help pass infrastructure, social reform, climate, and voting rights legislation supported by Americans of all parties. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell - himself a nine-time Ass Clown award and winner of the Ass Clown of the Year award for the last three years) - shamelessly refused until the literal last minute to assist Congressional Democrats in raising the debt ceiling, threatening the collapse of the American economy, downgrading of the nation's credit standing, and economic devastation for millions of Americans. And when he did "cooperate," it was only to the extent of grudgingly stepping back from total procedural opposition*** to allow the breaking of a filibuster which did not solve the debt crisis problem, but simply kicked the political can two months down the road to spoil Christmas rather than Halloween.

Today's Republican party is perhaps best summed up in this famous line from the film "The Dark Knight" ...

“Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

Sadly, we have no Batman to oppose the chaotic anarchy of the GOP Joker.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, the Republican Party is named as the Right-Cheek Ass Clown for October, 2012. Heaven help us.

Have a good day, and think wisely about how you vote in the coming elections.

More thoughts tomorrow, when we meet up with Frankenstein's monster in the second week of our annual Cartoon Saturday salute to Halloween.

Poetry Sunday

Unlike most men, I enjoy shopping for groceries. I like finding a good recipe to try, building a shopping list, and scouring the local sources for the right ingredients. I'd never thought about checking out at the grocery store as a metaphor for life, but this neat little poem by Thomas R. Moore sets up the idea nicely ...

Finding Everything
by Thomas R. Moore

Did you find everything you were
looking for? Julie, the magenta-haired

checkout girl, asks, and no, I think,
I didn't find inner peace, or answers to

several questions I've been mulling,
like are we headed for nuclear war and

does the rest of the world think America
has gone bonkers and also, by the way,

I could not find the tofu bacon, and
the chocolate sorbet shelf was empty

(I did find canned pumpkin in aisle four)
but I am silent and smile at Julie who

seems to know what I'm thinking anyway
so I hold back and muse on the view

of the bay this morning when we walked
the dog and the parsnip soup we'll

make for dinner and realize that total
fulfillment probably jades the senses and

the bagger asks if I'd like help today
carrying my groceries out to the car.

I'm not old and decrepit enough (yet) that Kelly and Ahmed and Ashley and Doug and Bianca and all the other checkers at the local Wegmans offer help getting my groceries to the car, but the few moments of friendly contact with our front-end heroes and heroines is often a pleasant part of the day ... whether or not we're headed for nuclear war and an increasingly bonkers America.

Have a good day and enjoy the rest of your weekend. More thoughts coming.

Cartoon Saturday

And a new month begins ...

Pharmaceutical giant Merck announced on Friday that it will soon ask health officials in the U.S. and around the world to authorize use of its experimental Covid-19 pill, which tests showed reduced hospitalizations and deaths by half in people recently infected with the deadly virus; after a delay of nearly three years, Japan's Princess Mako will marry her fiancĂ©, who is a commoner, in October; the governors of five midwestern states have announced a plan called called REV Midwest (the Regional Electric Vehicle Midwest Coalition) to build a new network for charging electric vehicles; SCOTUS Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh has tested positive for Covid-19, and is distraught to learn that beer is no more effective than Ivermectin as a treatment; and Christmas may be the latest victim of economic and supply chain woes, with toy retailers unable to stock shelves because toy shipments from China are being delayed by shortages of shipping containers and backlogs of unloading at ports.

Today is the first of five Saturdays in October, and in line with tradition we will focus each of our Cartoon Saturdays during Halloween month on a particular source of fright ... no, not the thought of a new GOP presidency, but the lesser terrors we wish were real, instead. Today, we focus on a terrible, rampaging gigantic beast - not Der Furor, but Godzilla ...

It's tough for monster parents, too ...

It's a nutrition campaign even monsters can get behind ...

No, it didn't work ...

Godzilla enjoys takeout sometimes, too ...

You had to figure this one would come sooner or later ...

Good question ...

You had to see this one coming, too ...

Good advice for anyone, not just Godzilla ...

Not only that, but its contents are poisonous ...

Hallelujah! ...

And so ends our first Cartoon Saturday for October, and the first of our annual festival of cartoons featuring the non-political things that terrify us. Next Saturday, we look at one of the most famous of the monsters - Dr Frankenstein's creation.

Have a good day and a great weekend. More thoughts coming.

Great Moments in Editing and Signage

New month, new opportunities to shake our heads over something other than the collapse of rational government ...

I wonder if Keith Richards is in the next plot over ...

Sometimes you have to wonder who decides which ads go next to which stories ...

I'll pass ... I liked all my aunts ...

TMI ...

I took this picture through the door into the back room of a shoe store a few months ago ...

Perhaps hanging would? ...

Things are tough all over ...

So, who selected the clip art for this ad? ...

Um ... no ...

Someone appears to misunderstand the term "hot dogs" ...

And there you go ... the first set of editorial and signage ya-ha's for October. Hope you enjoyed them.

Have a good day and come back tomorrow for Cartoon Saturday as we launch our annual Cartoons of Terror Festival ... more thoughts then.

Yes, everybody knows. But on the far right, nobody admits.

Cartoon Saturday

I'd wonder how much crazier things can get, but too many people would regard it as a challenge ...

The "Cyber Ninjas" finally released the report of their bizarre "fraudit" of the 2020 election in Maricopa County, Arizona ... not only confirming that Biden won, but that Der Furor lost by an even larger margin than originally reported ... Texas promptly announced it would conduct a similar "audit" in several counties won by President Biden, after the governor was hounded into doing so by Der Furor; a Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan has announced that extreme punishments such as execution and amputation will be reintroduced as "necessary for security;" the CDC has endorsed booster shots to protect older and otherwise-vulnerable Americans from Covid-19; and in Philadelphia, police are searching for a woman who exercised her Second Amendment rights by pulling a gun on employees at a Chipotle restaurant to force them to fill her order before closing the store.

After the deadly riot at the US Capitol on January 6th, police who sought to protect lawmakers from the screaming mob (which a GOP lawmaker said were simply tourists visiting the Capitol) described the fighting as "medieval." This week, a collection of cartoons about medieval warfare ... which was actually nothing to laugh about, but nowadays we've got to have something to laugh at ...

"Fruit of Aluminum" ... hah! ...

You'll be thankful for them later ...

Draft season for gladiators ...

Medieval battlefield triage ...

Nice try ...

Oh, dear ...

I've heard she now works ignoring subpoenas for Der Furor ...

I imagine they'll be in a pretty sour mood when they start negotiating ...

A somewhat different approach to siege warfare ...

At least it's not radon ...

We're done storming the battlements for this week. Have a good day and a great weekend ... here in NoVa, at least, the weather promises to be absolutely glorious. More thoughts tomorrow, when Musical Sunday returns.

The Left-Cheek Ass Clown for September, 2021

The publication of the astonishing new book Peril, by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, which details the relentless machinations of the GOP and other enablers of Der Furor to overturn the results of the 2020 election, plumbs the depths of despicable ass clownery to which desperate political losers will sink, and opens up a new roster of potential ass clown awardees. After some thought, and with due consideration of the degradation of the legal profession represented by those who would destroy our government to stroke the ego of a narcissistic sociopath, I have decided to present the award for

The Left-Cheek Ass Clown for September, 2021

to

John Eastman

John Eastman, a former tenured professor of law* and former dean at the Chapman University School of Law, gained well-earned notoriety this past week when a six-page memo he drafted for the former president was exposed in Woodward and Costa's new book.

The memo, breathtaking in its cynical audacity and shameless trampling of the Constitution, explains how former Vice President Pence could ignore the electoral votes of certain states, allowing the election to be cast into the House of Representatives, where a GOP majority (given one vote per state) would throw out the Biden victory and give the presidency to Der Furor. You can read his memo in its nauseatingly vile entirety here.

If there were any doubt about the moral bankruptcy of Der Furor and his enablers in and out of government, this grotesquely un-American plan should remove the blinders from the eyes of all but the most unsalvageable MAGA crazies.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Readers, John Eastman is named as the Left-Cheek Ass Clown of the Month for September, 2021, and awarded a rating of 750,000 on the Gohmert Stupidity Scale. The stain he leaves on the legal profession will remain for a long, long time.

Have a good day and come back tomorrow for Cartoon Saturday. More thoughts then.

Poetry Sunday

I'm very fond of poetry, and when I'm confused or depressed (which is depressingly often nowadays), I like to relax and calm down with a book of poetry.

Which today's Poetry Sunday is not.

I have seen this satirical piece several times across the Internet over the last week or so, and I'm not sure who the brilliant person was who decided that a December 2019 speech full of Der Furor's rambling nonsense might make a sort of very-free-verse poem. I'd like to be able to credit the original idea, but we'll just go with it for today, with the acknowledgement and understanding that it's not my work ... even though I wish it was ...

I never understood wind.
You know, I know
windmills very much.
I have studied it
better than anybody
else. It’s very expensive.
They are made in China
and Germany mostly.
—Very few made here, almost none,
but they are manufactured, tremendous
—if you are into this—
tremendous fumes. Gases are
spewing into the atmosphere. You know
we have a world
right?
So the world
is tiny
compared to the universe.
So tremendous, tremendous
amount of fumes and everything.
You talk about
the carbon footprint
— fumes are spewing into the air.
Right? Spewing.
Whether it’s in China,
Germany, it’s going into the air.
It’s our air
their air
everything — right?
A windmill will kill many bald eagles.
After a certain number
they make you turn the windmill off.
That is true.
—By the way
they make you turn it off.
And yet, if you killed one
they put you in jail.
That is OK.
You want to see a bird graveyard?
You just go.
Take a look.
A bird graveyard.
Go under a windmill someday,
you’ll see
more birds
than you’ve ever seen ever
in your life.

If we're going to elect a poet to be president, we can do better than this by electing, say, Edgar Allan Poe. Of course, he's dead ... but he'd still be an improvement on Der Furor.

Have a good day and enjoy the rest of your weekend. More thoughts coming.

Cartoon Saturday

What a week it's been ...

A joint announcement of a new defense relationship among the US, UK, and Australia has managed to piss off China, France, and the EU; so many unvaccinated people have been admitted to hospitals for intensive treatment that health care is now being rationed in some states, and doctors are having to choose which Covid patients to save; a new humanitarian crisis is growing on the southern border as some 10,000 migrants, mostly Haitians, are sheltering under a border bridge; fires raging in the west have destroyed thousands of giant sequoias, as attempts to save the rest are moving ahead; and in Pennsylvania, citizens will be hard-pressed to cope with 2021 because the state Liquor Control Board has imposed a limit of two bottles per customer per day of many products, citing "supply problems beyond its control."

It's been a long, long time since I've had to worry about the ins and outs of dating, and the way things are today, I don't know how well I'd do navigating the rocky shoals of changing expectations and Covid-19. This week, a collection of cartoons about dating in the new era ...

I had to think about this one for a moment ...

Sigh ...

This relationship was probably doomed from the start ...

If they're not careful, they may end up with an isotope ...

And he thought it was in the bag ...

I think a lot of people should come with warning labels, whether they're dating or not ...

I'm at the age where I understand this as a major criterion ...

Dating in the era of smart devices and dumb people ...

As turndowns go, this one is a classic ...

It's important to be prepared, because you never know when the sparks will fly ...

You may be better off any more by limiting your "dating" to simply consuming more fresh dates ... unless, of course, your name is Hannibal Lecter.

Have a good day and a great late-summer weekend. Get vaccinated, mask up, and protect yourselves and others. More thoughts tomorrow, on Poetry Sunday. See you then.
